Delphi on Linux Intel 64-bit: A Quantum Leap for Servers and Clients with RAD Studio 13.2

Delphi on Linux Intel 64-bit: A Quantum Leap for Servers and Clients with RAD Studio 13.2

The Delphi community eagerly awaits every new version of RAD Studio, and the upcoming version 13.2 promises a particularly exciting innovation for everyone using Delphi in a Linux environment. Embarcadero has announced a fundamental overhaul of the Delphi compiler for Linux Intel 64-bit. This is far more than just a routine update; it is a fundamental step that will significantly expand the possibilities for Delphi developers on Linux platforms.

A Breath of Fresh Air for the Linux Compiler

The previous Delphi compiler for Linux was based on an older LLVM version (3.3). With RAD Studio 13.2, the transition to LLVM Version 20.1 will be completed. This massive update is no small feat, requiring profound changes in the compiler frontend, intermediate representation, exception handling, linker, and debug information. The result is a significantly more modern Linux toolchain that not only utilizes current technologies but also simplifies future updates and optimizations.

For developers, this means a more stable, powerful, and future-proof foundation for their Linux applications. The ability to continuously benefit from newer LLVM versions ensures Delphi's relevance in the fast-paced Linux ecosystem.

Optimizations You Can Feel

One of the biggest advantages of the new compiler is improved code generation and the utilization of modern LLVM optimizations. While the old compiler did use LLVM for code generation, the newer optimization phases of the LLVM Intermediate Representation could not be fully applied. That changes now. Through adjustments in the frontend, including the handling of Delphi exceptions, these optimizations can now also be applied to release builds.

Internal tests show that some benchmarks run two to four times faster, with even more significant improvements possible in specific cases. Even if benchmarks are not directly transferable to real-world applications, this indicates a significant performance boost for Delphi applications on Linux. This is particularly relevant for web servers, microservices, and other compute-intensive back-end applications where every millisecond counts.

New Toolchain and Improved Debugging Experience

The revised compiler uses a customized version of LLVM's own LLD linker, which replaces the previous GNU Gold Linker. In addition, DWARF 5 debug information is now generated, instead of DWARF 2. These changes in the compiler frontend ensure that the debugger receives more precise information about source code positions, variables, and Delphi types. Debugging complex Linux applications will thus become significantly more comfortable and efficient.

Another practical advantage is that the new Delphi Linux compiler will be available as both a 32-bit and a 64-bit executable. This means that Linux Intel 64-bit applications can be developed directly from the 64-bit RAD Studio IDE, in parallel with Win64 and Windows Arm64EC projects. The 64-bit IDE eliminates the address space limitations of a 32-bit process, which is beneficial for larger compiler and IDE projects.

More Than Just Servers: FMXLinux for Client Applications

Although the focus of compiler development is on Linux web servers and services, the new compiler will also support the development of Linux client applications with FMXLinux. This opens up new possibilities for Delphi developers to create cross-platform graphical applications that run natively on Linux desktops. The improved performance and modern toolchain also come into play here, promising a better user experience for FMXLinux applications.

Conclusion and Outlook

The innovations in RAD Studio 13.2 for Delphi on Linux Intel 64-bit represent an important milestone. They modernize the underlying toolchain, significantly improve performance, and provide a more robust basis for developing server and client applications. For Delphi developers who are already using Linux or are considering it, this is a very promising development that will further strengthen Delphi's competitiveness in the Linux environment. It shows that Embarcadero continues to invest in the Delphi platform and make it future-proof.
